Memorial Brings the First Coast the New da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System, as featured on ABC’s Good Morning America .

Jacksonville, FL (August 24, 2009) – Memorial Hospital is the first and only hospital in Northeast Florida to acquire the new da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System.  This state-of-the-art robotic surgical system is designed to enhance the capabilities of surgeons by providing a new, minimally invasive approach to performing complicated surgeries, including hysterectomies and myomectomies, prostate and other urologic procedures; as well as cardiothoracic, colorectal and bariatric surgeries.  The benefit the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System brings to patients is less blood loss, less chance of infection, a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less scarring and faster recovery.

The da Vinci® Si™, which was recently featured on ABC’s Good Morning America, is the latest addition to the da Vinci® Surgical System product line by Intuitive Surgical, Inc., a global leader in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Unlike previous da Vinci® surgical systems, the da Vinci® Si™ has incorporated the latest in 3D hi-def technology (1080i), essentially doubling visual clarity with up to 10x magnification.

Until very recently, patient options for traditional surgery included large, open incisions or laparoscopy, which uses small incisions but is typically limited to very simple procedures.  Thanks to this breakthrough surgical technology, this new category of minimally invasive robotic surgery allows surgeons to offer a minimally invasive option for complex surgical procedures.

Dr. Stephen Buckley, Southeast Gynecologic Oncology Associates, was the first surgeon to utilize the da Vinci Robot at Memorial Hospital, and stated that the precision of the da Vinci made it ideal for his first patient’s hysterectomy.

“The da Vinci surgical system allows the surgeon a 3D, high definition view of the surgical field, and very precise maneuvering of wristed instruments that have an even better range of motion than the human wrist,” Dr. Buckley said. “These advancements allow me to perform complex surgical procedures with less risk to the patient and a much quicker recovery.”

The da Vinci® Si ™consists of four interactive robotic arms, controlled by the surgeon from a console.  An optional dual console also allows for the possibility of a second surgeon to assist in a procedure or can be used as a training tool in educating new users.  The highly sensitive robotic arms have been engineered to precisely mimic the movement of the surgeon’s fingers, wrists and hands and can only operate when commanded by the surgeon.
